Home location and loans

Saturday, December 13th, 2008

One of the main factors which determine the value of a home is its location. A home located in a prime urban area will cost significantly more than a home in a rural village even if the area of the home and cost of construction are the same. So while purchasing a house, it is important to ascertain the ownership of the land on which the house is built by consulting the land records maintained by the local government. The land records include detailed maps of the area and the location of each home with the geographical co-ordinates.

Since a home is the largest investment in a person’s life , it is advisable to check the home loan interest rates before taking a decision . In case a person has already taken a loan when the interest rates were high, he or she can consider home loan refinancing to avail of the lower interest rates offered by the financial institutions at present.

To refinance home loan, the borrower has to provide some basic information like the state in which the home is located, the type of home, repayment period, approximate value of the home, current interest rate and approximate annual income. The borrower only has to indicate whether his credit rating is excellent, fair, good or poor, the exact credit score or credit records need  not be provided. A number of loan specialists will contact the borrower with offers from different companies, so that he can get the best deal and reduce the amount he repays towards the home purchase every month.

Maps for travel

Tuesday, November 4th, 2008

If you know your destination in advance, you can use the various mapping services with the help of search engines .  Print out directions from the starting  point to the destination, step by step, and also print out the associated map.
One of the most popular mapping services is Google Maps
http://maps.google.com/

The main problem with using online maps and with other computerized solutions is these systems are calculating distances from maps. They are not aware of one-way streets, no left turns, roads that are under construction, etc. so you have to be able to understand where to go when the map tells you to make an illegal or impossible turn.

For getting cheap maps you can join an auto club. If you have a gasoline credit card, that chain probably has some kind of travel club. The premier association for auto owners in the USA is the American Automobile Association.
The website of American Automobile Association is http://www.aaa.com/

You only pay one annual fee and get a number of services at little or no additional fees. One of them is the map service in advance of a trip. They know where there is road construction going on. They also know where a traveler can get the best gas prices. If you have pets, children, elderly in wheelchair traveling with you, they know their needs and where they can be best served. They know the fastest route between 2 places, the most scenic route. You tell them your needs, and they provide you the information at no cost, other than the annual membership. If you run into trouble on your journey and need roadside assistance, the American Automobile Association can help.

Distortions in maps

Wednesday, October 1st, 2008

Maps are a projection on a 2 dimensional flat surface of a 3 dimensional sphere, the earth . At best they are an approximation to help understand the relative positions of the various continents and oceans. There are always some distortions of conformality, distance, direction, scale, and area during this process. While it may be possible to minimize distortions in the projections for some of the properties,  the errors in other properties may be increased. Other map projections will try to minimize distortion of all of these properties to an equal extent.

Conformality
A projection is considered to be conformal,if the scale of a map at any point on the map is uniform in any direction . Meridians (lines of longitude) and parallels (lines of latitude) intersect at right angles on these maps. Shape is preserved on conformal maps locally .

Scale
Scale of a map is the ratio of the distance portrayed on a map and the same distance on the Earth.

Area
When the areas on a map over the entire map are shown so that all mapped areas have the same proportional relationship to the actual area on the surface of the Earth that they represent, the map is an equal-area map.
Different map projections can show different spatial relationships between regions, as hilly  regions may not be correctly drawn.

Types of maps

Tuesday, September 30th, 2008

The different types of maps are:

Climate maps
give general information about the climate and precipitation (rain and snow) of a region. Cartographers, or mapmakers, use colors to show different climate or precipitation zones.

Economic or resource maps
feature the type of natural resources or economic activity that dominates an area. Cartographers use symbols to show the locations of natural resources or economic activities. For example, oranges on a map of Florida tell you that oranges are grown there.

Political maps
do not show physical features. Instead, they indicate state and national boundaries and capital and major cities. A capital city is usually marked with a star within a circle.

Road maps
show major—some minor highways—and roads, airports, railroad tracks, cities and other points of interest in an area. People use road maps to plan trips and for driving directions.

Topographic maps
include contour lines to show the shape and elevation of an area. Lines that are close together indicate steep terrain, and lines that are far apart indicate flat terrain.
